Thanks to all for your suggestions, my Pismo is now connected to my wireless network with WPA-PSK encryption enabled.
I set the router(Netgear WPN824 v3) to B & G mode and selected WPA-PSK security. I entered a 12 character passphrase and it generated 4 keys. When I first started the Pismo it wouldn't give me a chance to enter the password. Then I started the Airport Setup Assistant which asked me for the password. Entering the key didn't work until I put a "$" in front of it. I also had to enter the alpha characters in the key in lower case. Eventually the Airport Setup Assistant stalled out (not knowing what to make of a netgear router) so I quit out of it. After quitting Setup I was connected! For reference the pismo is running 4.1.1, Airport Admin and Setup are version 4.1.1, airport card firmware is 9.52 and AppleAirport version is 3.4.9. I'm so pleased that my trusty powerbook still functions as well as it does. Thanks again Andrew in Ann Arbor
