Just wondering: when my MacBookPro and I are on the move, I connect the MBP to the internet via a mobile broadband modem. (details of my UK provider here: http://tinyurl.com/yk9tgwa). It's not hugely fast but provides an acceptable level of service for email and web-browsing wherever there's a halfway-decent cellphone signal.
You might consider looking into such services in your location, especially if there is a pay-as-you-go option. Mobile broadband should be faster than your 24K dial-up, and you can just plug the mobile broadband into a USB port of your iMac, and hence leave it where it is. I'd just hate to think of you lugging the iMac around and dropping it...
