I can't seem to understand how to get my Pismo and my LaserJet 6MP to
speak to eachother. I use the 6MP with a parallel port to USB cable
with my eMac and it works like a dream. When I try to plug it into the
Pismo's USB port, however, only rarely will I catch the HP flicker in
the printer and fax preferences window. It doesn't stay on - and it is
very briefly appearing.

Thoughts on how I can solve this?

Running Tiger 10.4.11 on the Pismo - but Panther 10.3.9 yet on the
eMac. Is it a Tiger issue? Or perhaps a Pismo issue?

My guess:
Your USB to Parallel Cable supports UHCI but not OHCI (Open Host Controller Interface) when connected to a USB1 port.

See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OHCI

Your eMac supports USB 2.0 - when plugged in your converter cable sees a USB2.0 port and communicates via the EHCI standard common to all USB2.0 devices. When plugged into your Pismo, your cable sees a USB1.1 port and tries to communicate via UHCI standard. However, the Pismo only supports OHCI.

Two ways to fix this:
(1) get a USB to parallel cable which supports the OHCI standard for USB 1.1 devices.
or (2) Add USB 2.0 ports to your Pismo via PCMCIA card
