I found a cute desktop wallpaper on the internet some time ago, and
have recently put it back up on my Pismo, as well as the iMac I use at
college. It's an interesting twist on the traditional, "Hi, I'm a Mac"
"And I'm a PC," WALL-E style. Just Google "Wall-E Eve Mac PC" and
you'll see what I'm talking about. (I'm a columnist for the college
newspaper, and my editor-in-chief [a girl] thought it was "so cute!" I
didn't know she was so sentimental.)
Anyway, it somewhat contradicts my perception of the Mac camp vs.
the PC camp. I've always seen Macs as very EVE-like: aesthetically
appealing, clean, and usually built-in with a bunch of "hidden",
really cool features. WALL-E, though, doesn't strike me as the best
match for PC (that would probably be MO). Perhaps it's the fact that
he makes the Macintosh chime when his batteries are full, or the fact
that he's got a bunch of Apple stuff in his truck-thing on earth…
What I've noticed, both in the LEM community and out in the real
world, is that owners of newer and/or home/education-level Macs
(iBooks, MacBooks, etc.) usually tend to be female, whereas owners of
older and/or professional-level Macs (MacBook Pro, Mac Pro, Power
Macs, PowerBooks) tend to be male (I'm using my old PowerBook G3
Pismo, after all). My Mom likes the iMac G4 I bought, my Dad likes my
Pismo. My younger sister uses her iBook Clamshell (formerly mine—and
I'm not sorry I bought my Pismo to replace it), and my even younger
brother is almost obsessed with my even-older PowerBook Duo 230 that
eventually found its way into his hands. My other brother, just
younger than me, prefers PC—go figure.
At school, I see a lot of guys with MacBook Pros, and a lot of girls
with MacBooks. There are rare exceptions, but that's generally the
case. I also see a lot of iPod Touches with the guys, and a lot of
Nanos with the girls.
Anybody else noticed this, or am I seeing a local phenomenon?
