This makes the most sense to set up a separate router. I tried it
last week. I brought home the cheap o from the shop but my modem only
has one Ethernet port so do I need a splitter of sorts? So I wasn't
able to get on the net in tandem with the Gigabit wireless n unit.

You need a 10/100 switch. I'd go with an 8 port switch.

Do you mean to use the switch between the cable modem and the routers?

No, between the router and computers.

Tried that and the cheap o router (dedicated for a/b cards) will not connect to
the internet. I think because the NETGEAR is direct to the modem and is WPA
encryted?

Do you mean to connect the cheapo router to the Ethernet switch that is between
the NETGEAR n router and the wired machines> ?

Yes, connect a LAN port on the cheapo router to the switch and thence to the main router. Set the cheapo router up as just an AP. That means no DHCP and no NAT.

If you have a spare port on the main router then you don't need the switch.
