Sasuke, What do you mean by "grey thing"? Apple's classic OS (1 through 9.2.2, and then into the early revisions of OS X) used a happy Mac as their "everything's OK, booting up now" symbol and a sad Mac as their "Um, it looks like we've got a problem here" symbol. For the later OS X models (with the gray screen and Apple logo), the sad Mac symbol was replaced by a Ø symbol, I believe. If that's what you're getting, your Mac has a hardware problem that is preventing it from booting up (but you probably already assumed that). The fact that you can get into those early-boot-sequence menus (bootable partitions and firewire mode) leads me to believe that it's probably not an issue with your logic board (thank goodness), but may be, yes, a hard drive issue. Since you've got firewire, your PowerBook could be anything between a PowerBook G3 Pismo (2000—I have one) to a PowerBook G4 aluminum (discontinued 2006). Could you please give a few more details, such as the model of your PB, which OS X version you are running, and the model of your Hitachi hard drive?
By the way, I also have a Hitachi hard drive—a 120 GB model that replaced my faulty 80 GB Toshiba. It has served without a hitch since I bought it in July 2008. However, our family desktop has a Hitachi 500 GB hard drive that does not like Windows Vista at all—with Windows 7, it's fine. Good luck, Austin On Mar 21, 7:09 am, Sasuke Uchiha <[email protected]> wrote: > hello all, i was the one with the dead PMU, well things have now gotten worse. > > I booted up my pb today, and i got a grey screen. no apple logo, no > swirly...thing just a grey thing. i reset pmu, reseated ram, i held > down the option key to bring up a list of bootable partitions, and > none came up. it took me about 5 minutes of holding down the t key to > get it into firewire, and it doesnt show up. it cant be the hard drive > because its nearly brand new. any other ideas, or have hitatchi let me > down again? > > Thanks in advance > > Sasuke Uchiha -- You received this message because you are a member of G-Books, a group for those using G3 iBooks and PowerBooks (we run a separate list for G4 'Books).
