You may need to reset the PRAM to get the old drive recognized again. 
Press Command-Option-P-R immediately that you turn the computer on, and
wait for the computer to give its startup chime at least 3 times (should
be 30 seconds to one minute total elapsed time).  I'm not sure why it is
recommended to wait for the chimes 3 times...

If running OS 9, you will probably have to reset a few settings.
