Well, I did some web searches and sorted out several problems and I'd like to share with you my results:

#1: the D-link thing supports Apple Talk (this was the very first problem as I thought it did not) #2: I assigned to the the 12/640 an IP using the apple laserwriter utility on a Wallstreet under OS 9 (now I can even use the 12/640 with the MacBook running snow leopard) #3: indeed I have also a Personal LaserWriter NTR, which can only be used under AppleTalk, so the iBook G3 with the D-link thing not only can print to that printer, but can also serve as print server for the MacBook running OS X 10.6!

Needless to say that I am pretty happy!

Thanks for the advice,

Ben

You could set up the 12/640 for IP, if you still have a machine that
will load Classic or OS9 to set the IP address.

Go to Apple and get the manual for that printer, you should be able to use Terminal in OS X to set up IP printing on that printer...look in the section of the manual for setting it up for Unix systems.
