I've had a very similar problem with my Clamshell and my G4 iBook as
well with both my iPod Shuffle and my iPod Touch, first of all, check
if your computer "sees" the iPod (about this mac, More info, in USB
section, should say "iPod")
Everytime this happens to me, iTunes does not recognize the iPod but
the iPod appears in system profiler, so the easy fix is restart the
iBook with the iPod already plugged into a USB port. If that doesn't
works, I'd suspect of: The iPod cable, the Dock connector itself in
the iPod or the USB port in your iBook, you should also try with a
powered USB hub, perhaps the iBook does not have the enough power for
the iPod, also, if you have a FireWire iBook I'd highly recommend
using a Firewire cable for your iPod, it will be faster than the old
and slow USB 1.1 from the clamshell.
Also, if 10.3 doesn't work with the iPod, iTunes should come with a
message like "you need to update your software" or something like that
(happened when I had 10.3 on my G4 iBook and I bought an iPod touch, I
had to upgrade to 10.4 in order to make it work, but 10.3 should
recognize the iPod)
by the way, sorry about my english as I'm not a native speaker.
Greetings from Chile.
