If you have parts machines, consider replacing the backlight.  I took
one that was still bright from a cracked display, and transplanted it
to one that was very pink, but whole.  Remove the display and you'll
find a narrow panel on the bottom that is held on with tiny screws.
The fluorescent tube just pops out, with the wires attached.  Just
takes patience and very small screwdrivers...
