What I'm trying to do, rather than generate actual thumbnails, is change
the resource in jpgs and pngs so that, when I click on "preview" in the
Appearance control panel desktop tab (or any other dialog box), the
picture actually shows up, rather than "no preview available." Another
net effect of this is that the pictures will also be able to show icon
previews as well.
This morning, I remembered I used MacLinkPlus last time to do the
translation, so I'll probably go that route again. That is, if I can
keep the program from crashing my Pismo everytime I try to use it...
Thanks for the reply.

I recall that there was a program that would change a resource in
jpgs so that OS 9 would show the image preview in, not only Finder,
but in dialog boxes and the Appearance control panel. I got it
working once, a long time ago, but now I cannot remember how I did
it. Anyone have any idea what would allow this behavior? I'd like to
be able to change the desktop image without having to guess what the
image is via filename.
There are quite a few apps that can generate previews and icons.
GraphicConverter is my fav.
