Thanks to everybody who chimed in on this! Tom, I have two screwdriver sets, with a gazillion different heads... and I tried them all... unsuccessfully.
Matt, you are absolutely right, there is no need at all to tighten that particular screw too much. I just have a grip like a vise. I do the same thing with bottle caps. Angelo, I definitely won't buy another screwdriver, for the above reasons. I finally came up with a Solomonic solution. I realized that the heat shield is extremely flexible, so I played with it until I could get it out without breaking it. I needed to take it off to install the HDD cage.
