I know this is old, but I thought I'd inform everyone that this does
in fact work.
The unit will boot when connected to power via these contacts, and
will charge/attempt to charge the battery.
One caveat:
The orange indicator light does not light when using the "alternate
charging contacts" as it relies on a resistor connecting the shroud
and sense contact in the yoyo connector. Maybe a dummy connector could
be made to get it back. As is, the green light comes on when contact
is made, and shuts off about a second later, to come on again when the
battery is fully charged, or not present.

I have booted so far just holding the wires in place by hand, next I
am going to fabricate a baseplate with finish nails and wood.
