The only time I've seen that problem is when you try using the trackpad with 
sweaty fingers... The cursor jumps around, and sleeping it fixes the problem. 
I've seen the same thing happen on a Powerbook 1400, Pismos, Lombards, and 
iBooks.

The "hot swappable" drive bays require the computer to be asleep before 
swapping them - At least in OSX. In OS9, make sure the icon in the Control 
Strip says they're ejectable. If they're not, or you're running OSX, that could 
be your problem.
