Hmm... usually it's a dead or depleted PRAM battery that causes this, but even my Wally with a new PRAM battery won't boot from the battery sometimes. Usually it's when I do a hard shutdown via the keyboard or yank the batteries, but it has happened other times too. Chalk it up to quirkiness in the Wally hardware, I guess.
