No, this is probably because the ram is not compatible, quite often you will find that if you use high density ram then only half of it will be recognised, I am not familiar with the Fast Mac upgrade, but I bet it only supports low density ram, the other possibility is that the memory controller can not address more than 768M, if you fit the new module on it's own is it seen as 512 or 256, if it is only seen as 256 then you either have incompatible ram, or a faulty module, if the whole 512M is seen then it is probably a limitation of the memory controller.
