Hi Simon,

Installing OS9 on a TiBook 500 generally is not a problem regardless of any
existing OSX installations.

The only Gotcha could be missing OS9 HD drivers on the internal drive. OS9
would not see this drive. Check the ATA HD info in the OSX system profiler. If
they are installed it will tell you there. If not, you will need to re-format
the HD with the OS9 drivers checked on.
This will erase all partitions on the drive.
Be aware that you won´t be able to re-install Leopard without using a 867Mhz or
faster G4 MAC using the Firewire target Mode or doing a HD swap with a
867Mhz/1GHz TiBook.
The easiest way to avoid any messing with your existing system is by using an
external Firewire HD as dedicated OS 9 drive. That´s how I would do it.

Regarding the flickering of the display I can think of 4 possible reasons for a
failing backlight:
1. Inverter cable (white and pink) is getting damaged at the hinge causing
increased resistance.
2. Big white connector at the inverter is getting loose causing internal
sparking and therefor increased resistance.
3. Inverter is going bad. Inverters wear out over time. Sometimes a
buzzing/hissing noise is a good indication for a worn out inverter.
4. The CFL tube in the display is wearing out. It is replaceable but it is
quite a surgery. Not for the faint hearted.

Good Luck
Roland
