Hi Simon, Yes, you need a higher version than OS 9.1. The retail OS 9.1 install disk won´t work. I just confirmed this with my 400Mhz Tibook. I did my OS9 install a couple of years ago with the help of another Power PC MAC which was able to boot from the 9.1 retail install disk. ( I think it was an upgraded PM7500/G4/Firewire). I put the Tibook into Firewire Target mode, and did the install from the other machine. After that I downloaded the updates to 9.2.2 from the Apple web site. Once the Install was updated to 9.2.2 the Tibook had no issues to boot from the OS9 partition of the internal HD.
Another option is to copy the complete System folder from another 9.2 machine onto the TiBook´s HD. That´s what I usually do now after I had the issue which you are experiencing right now. Strangely there are some Tibook bootable 9.1 versions out there like the original install disks and some version of the Apple Hardware Test. I think, that the issue lies with the software ROM file. Once you have that installed, the Tibook will boot.
