Are any of the icons in the menu bar responsive to the mouse?
The hard drive icon does not appear on the desktop although the
screen stays lit.
At that point, Finder is loading. Things that would hang Finder are:
1) an automounted afp volume that isn't responding.
2) a problem with the desktop database any of the HD volumes.
3) a file system corruption on any of the HD volumes.
Does the machine start with extensions off (shift key held down)?
