17" Powerbook, 1.67 high resolution model. The hard drive died so I put a new one in. Since putting the new one in the computer hangs when booting off either the Tiger dvd or the hard drive. The only way I could install the os was via target mode.

The computer will start up and show the startup screen and go past the
login screen, the cursor arrow appears( but cannot be moved,) but
hangs before the hard drive icon appears on the desktop when starting
off the hard drive.

What you tried seems reasonable.

Boot into safe mode (shift key held down). Does the machine still hang? If not reboot normally - does the machine then still hang?

Boot the machine into target disk mode and plug it into another Mac. View it's system log and check for error messages.

With the internal HD disconnected, when you boot from an external drive, does the hang occur?

Make sure you haven't dislodged any of the other connectors, esp those going to the trackpad etc.

Also I have tried to post this message to the G4 book list but it won't show up there

Some of the LEM lists are broken. Best bet, as always, is the G3-5-List, where the biggest audience is anyway.
