I recently acquired a PB G3 Wallstreet PDQ (266MHz, 128MB RAM) off Ebay. The machine didn't come with a battery but did have the floppy drive, DVD drive and the AC Adapter. It is in stunning condition considering I only paid $15 for it (plus shipping). I now am of course considering what upgrades might be good to add to it, especially when it comes to one of the biggest performance bottlenecks on old PowerBooks -- the slow 2.5" hard drive.
Has anyone here tried OWC's IDE SSD?: http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other+World+Computing/SSDMLP040/ It claims to be compatible with the entire PowerBook G3 series, including the earliest Wallstreets. I'm mainly interested in knowing if it would positively impact battery life and performance enough to make it truly with the $150 price tag. I'm also looking at CPU upgrades too for the PDQ, but the 500MHz G3 upgrades that were on the market around the year 2000 are now long gone and don't even show on EBAY. For that reason I've just been considering improving performance with a different hard drive, and possibly bumping the RAM from 128MB to 512MB (OWC sells the old RAM too). I would appreciate hearing your thoughts.
