Hi G-gookers I've recently become the proud possessor of a gigahertz TiBook, with the aim of having a mac that can boot into OS9, Tiger and Leopard at my whim.
The TiBook came with a 60GB hard disk which I partitioned into 3 volumes: 10Gb for OS9, 25GB for Tiger, 25Gb for Leopard. Installing the OSX variants onto their partitions from retail installer DVDs went smoothly but installing OS9 has been so far a tale of (almost) fail. Using a OS9.1 retail CD - The CD appears in 'startup disk' in system preferences and can be selected but restarting boots to the Tiger install. - The CD doesn't appear in open firmware options (starting while holding down the 'option' key). - The CD is ignored if restarting when holding down the 'C' key. - If the TiBook is booted into Leopard, unsurprisingly the 'Install Mac OS 9.1' is crossed out. - If the TiBook is booted into Tiger, the 'Install Mac OS 9.1' starts but then says that the system folder can't be changed because the installer CD is read-only (which seems logical but unfair!) The only options at that point are to quit or nominate a different system folder for starting classic. - CCCing the OS9.1 retail disk to a disk image gets the same result. - CCCing the OS9.1 retail disk to a RAM disk (created using Esperance DV) gets the same result. I also tried installing OS9 from an iBook G4 Mac OS 9 disk - no joy. Starting the TiBook in firewire target disk mode, connecting it to my Pismo, then installing OS9 from the retail OS9 CD onto the TiBook appeared to work but this partition still doesn't appear in the open firmware options. This instance of OS9 begins to work in the 'classic' arrangement under Tiger (10.4.11) but hangs before the extension dance starts. My Quicksilver 20002 G4 desktop is of the same vintage as the TiBook - it came with a dedicated OS9 installer disk. (All attempts to install OS9 from a retail disk failed.) I guess that the TiBook would have originally had its own dedicated OS9 installer CD but I didn't receive that. (Not blaming the vendor - he told me up from that the TiBook came without installer media.) The TiBook can boot from the Quicksilver's OS9 installer disk but the OS9 installer doesn't work - presumably the installer looks for certain hardware that the TiBook doesn't have. CCCing my Pismo's working OS9 partition via Firewire to the TiBook's OS9 partition does work - I can boot the TiBook into OS9. However it's not the the clean installation I'd want. So - can anyone confirm that the TiBook came with a dedicated OS9 installer CD? - if so, can anyone sell me one or point me in the direction of a source? many thanks Bruce ------- Bruce Ryan M 07909 504328 E [email protected] -- You received this message because you are a member of G-Books, a group for those using G3 iBooks and PowerBooks (we run a separate list for G4 'Books).
