I think I would prefer to try the first. Anyone tried this?

I've used old printers using several Parallel-to-USB cables. HP made a special Parallel-to-USB adapter cable called "HP Printer Cable Kit for iMac™ P/N C4033-60003" which came with OS 9 drivers which to my knowledge is the only such cable that works in OS 9. You can actually use almost any generic Parallel-to-USB cable in OS X, the Belkin is probably a little more than some of the other options. eBay has some generic for the unbelievable low price of 90¢ shipped?:

Almost all of these cables use the Prolific Logic PL-2303, which has OS X drivers available for older OS X, and doesn't need drivers for newer OS X.
