I'm astonished to hear this--you're using OS X, right? My Pismo 500 Mhz, with inferior graphics, slower processor (G3), and same 256MB RAM, has no problems whatsoever in OS X.I.IV. I did occasionally back in OS 9 (.0.2-.04, I think).
