Recently, it was actually cheaper to get one of those 10GB or so VST exp. bay drives for $50 and then drop in a 30GB or whatever. Unfortunately, they seem to be all sold out now. Pity.
I haven't disassembled one of those Zips, but a similar successful experiment one guy tried was ripping out the floppy innards from a 5300 floppy drive and putting a HD in it. The VST cases aren't hard to take apart, but a little solid padding might be required (or drilling screw holes) might be req'd to get the 2.5" HD to fit snugly (i.e., without moving the 3.5" Zip shell.
