Holy cow! you have to be kidding! Wow, wish I had thought of that 
when I had a 5300. Could have saved me a bundle in external drives

I don't think the Zips are made the same. I found that out with my 
external 100s that are SCSI and an attempt to do that with them. I 
found out then that the Zip component is just that, a component, and 
not components. I was bummed.

So be careful before you attempt this that you are doing it AFTER the 
warranty is up on the drive (and check to see if they have a return 
going on any of those drives).
