I only suggested mozzilla as it sounded as though you were having to restart due to netscape crashes. :) I've yet to get itunes to play under OS9 with anything else going on without it stuttering, so I can't speak to that. >> It mirrors the things you've said, ie they would have their DVD playboy >> stutter every few seconds as the drive unparked its heads to access data, >> etc. > This clicking interruption, however, will occur when the hard drive is not > being called upon to access anything. It can occur when I'm just using Word > and working on a document -- with iTunes music playing, however (is access > to info then occurring?). Often times your hard drive is access by the OS even when you aren't actively doing anything. :) This could be anything from virtual memory, preferences being set, the app writing to a temp file... Word may be set to autosave... Anything. :) Itunes is accessing the hard drive when you're playing music, as well it has to read the MP3 from the hard drive. It loads what it needs into memory, and then goes back for more. >> Hopefully under the system profiler you will be able to see what the drive >> is- if it is the hitachi DK23CA-10, DK23CA-20, or DK23CA-30 then it probably >> is the culprit, not your computer. > The drive is DK23BA-20, revision #00E0A0C3. Your drive could very well not be affected by the bug or it could. It sounds just like it, though. If you had the parts, it'd be pretty easy to figure out. You could have the apple guys put a different hard drive in the computer and see if it still occurs- if it does, then it's not the HD. > Another reason that the shop man advised going to a new machine (besides > a commission -- if he gets one) is that my screen is "pinking" in the lower > corners when initially awakened. Yeah, they're probably right if the pinking bothers you- replacing the screen probably isn't cost effective. > Thanks for the advice about drive replacement. I'd definetely keep my eye on it- the hitachi's should be clicking pretty much from day one if it is parking/unparking. Usually though if a notebook drive starts clicking it's nearing the end of its life. One last suggestion- you =may= be able to set the drive's access time via software. Not all drives support it though, first link is OSX and second is classic. <http://www.versiontracker.com/moreinfo.fcgi?id=12162&db=mac> <http://www.versiontracker.com/redir.fcgi/kind=4&db=mac&id=12162/moreinfo.fc gi?id=8162&db=mac> Basically it sets your drive's power management settings much higher (try 255) on drives that support it, which can improve performance because you don't have to wait for your drives heads to park/unpark.
