When I wanted to go wireless with my iBook, I didn't bother with the AirPort
Base Station (ABS) because I didn't want to pay for the built in modem, AOL
compatibility, firewall protection etc. I only needed a wireless connection
to my ethernet hub. I have a DSL connection shared via a Power Computing
clone running IPNet Router over my home network.

That's why I bought a Linksys WAP (wireless access point). I just plugged it
into my ethernet hub, plugged in the AC and it was ready. My iBook instantly
recognized it and it even showed up in my AirPort menu as "Linksys". They go
for around $100 new (and less of course on eBay).

Since all the Macs on my LAN are set to share via TCP/IP, and my Apple
LaserWriter is TCP/IP, I can print and share files without any trouble. Plus
it has twice the range of an ABS (up to 300' indoors, 1500' outdoors). Mine
is located in my attic studio (3rd floor) and I have yet to find a location
indoors that provides less than a full signal strength (based on the
graphical meter in the Apple menu).

And while they don't directly support the Mac, they don't ban it or void you
Linksys warranty either. Otherwise they wouldn't provide info on their
website such as how to determine the MAC address of a Macintosh (OS9 & OSX),
discuss AppleTalk compatibility etc. Nor would Apple recommend a their
wireless print server on their own site.
