My comments are based on experience. My titles mean nothing. I am a
glorified car mechanic.

I warranty drives all the time with Transinternational (most of them IBM and
Western Digital). I dial the same number as you. They offer me no
*special* treatment, and my record with them has been sparkling. I am never
on hold for more than a minute or 2 and they are prompt. I got an RMA from
a fellow named Damon this morning and it took less than 2 minutes.
Sometimes they refer me to the manufacturer, but what do you expect? They
really aren't obligated to allow you to return it at all. You may have
dropped it, or handled it incorrectly,or static discharged it. How should
they know what you did to it?

Secondly, they are perfectly correct when they say that they may not have a
replacement drive on hand and they want to push you off to IBM directly.
Why should they replace a drive that is covered under a 3 year manufacturers
warranty when IBM can do it even faster than they can. And by law they are
only technically forced to warranty your drive if you return it within 72
hours of the purchase, as they are located in California and that is the law
here. After 72 hours, unless specified in writing, any further obligation
is on the manufacturer of the goods that were purchased.

They are licensed and bonded. None of your data will be shared, and if you
feel so strongly about it then you better not go to an ATM in public, or use
a VISA card a a store, or appear on a security camera, or (heaven forbid)
get fingerprinted for a job. That's all I am saying.

The following is my strong personal opinion so stop reading at this point if
you are easily offended:

It is people like you sir, that tie up phone lines by demanding unreasonable
customer service and in the process make other people wait. You should have
listened to the person at Transinternational and sent the drive back to IBM.
IBM has a 48 hour turn around (faster than Traninternational), meaning that
you would already have your drive back and not have wasted the time of the
reps at Transinternational, or the time and bandwidth of the people on this
list. By going through Transinternational you place the blame of faulty
hardware on the supplier...not the manufacturer where it belongs. By doing
so you also remove stock from the shelves of the supplier that may be
destined that very day to a school, or your friend, or myself... instead of
dealing with the problem in a professional manner and contacting IBM for a
replacement.
