What do you mean when you say that the processor is 'ticking'??  I don't think
they make any noise. Could it be because your hard drive is making that noise?

Your mention of 'ticking' reminded me of this:  A little while ago, my Pismo
hard drive started making a lot of clicking (ticking?) sounds just before it
died.  While it was making these sounds, disk access was extremely slow and
the 'book was inoperable.  I might 

Two questions: 
(i)  Have you tried using the PowerBook Hardware Test CD?  It should have come
with your machine.  That might help you figure out if a hardware component has
died. 

(ii) Will your Powerbook start up OK if you use a OS 9 CD as the startup disk?
 If so, then maybe your hard drive is having problems.
