I have a G3 Powerbook with OS 9.1 installed and have been having
difficulty with various applications and web sites requiring Mac Runtime
Java.

I had version 2.1.4 installed and in a recent application installation,
the installer asked to install version 2.2.5. After copying the old
extensions, I went ahead with the installation. The software does not
recognize that the extension is even present.

When that didn't seem to work, I downloaded another copy of MRJ 2.2.5
from the Apple Web site and installed that, rebuilt the desktop and
rebooted the computer. It still isn't recognized by the software or other
web sites.

I should mention that this is not a new problem with this computer. I've
come across web sites that required MRJ and saw the notes that I didn't
have it installed and have not bothered about learning why this was so
until now.

The Extension Folder contains a folder called "MRJ Libraries" and this
was the same type of setup present in the former version.

Even if I remove two of the main components from the "MRJ Libraries"
folder and simply leave them in the Extensions Folder, nothing is
recognized by the new application or web sites requiring Java.

Has anyone else had this problem and developed a solution?

Can anyone inform me why a seemingly correct placement of this software
within the System Folder, is not recognized by the applications that
require it?

TIA.

Tom
