IIRC, most external FireWire drives have a bridge from the ATA interface
to FireWire (like Oxford 911, a popular one on several drives I've seen
online). The glitch may be in the bridge rather than on the ATA side...
I also think I recall that IBM was the target of a class action suit
about one of their drives. Might not hurt for someone to run that one
down, in case the 48GB is connected with that suit. I do note that
finding the 48GB Travelstars is harder now than a couple of months ago -
it's not so hard to find the 40GB ones, though.
On the other hand, if you got the 48GB and a piece of the class action
suit, you might come out really ahead on that... ;-)
