I had two Pismo DVD-ROMs die on me, one under warrantee one not.
Replaced the second one out of pocket buying a second hand one that has
been fine so far, been about 6-9 months now.

Many people consider particular revs. of the Pismo DVD-ROM just to be
bad but Apple has never said anything and I don't think anyone has
really pressured them to.

You can find new DVD-ROMs for about $80-150 used, $150+ new or David
Wedge is on some of these lists and will give you $50 towards a CDRW or
CDRW/DVD-ROM drive module for your Pismo for your old dead DVD. His
combo drives are $250 before the money back.
