That's what I would suggest too. I was using a 7 port hub with my iBook when anchored to a desk. The iBook was on a stand. Plugged into the hub was an Apple Pro keyboard, a Kensington TurboMouse Pro trackball, my Palm cradle and Epson inkjet printer. When I sat down, all I had to do was plug the hub into one of my USB ports and I was set to go. I also had external speakers so all I had to do was plug them into the AV jack. However, once I got AirPort up and running, I lost all interest in anchoring myself to a desk so I quit using the setup. I took a picture of the setup a while back.
