FSCK is over rated, and i haven't much faith in it.

boot to the OS X CD  but don't install... when you get to the Languages 
screen (which is the first screen), go to the Installer menu and choose 
"Open Disk Utility".

or get another disk repair utility, preferably not Norton, and trending 
towards Disk Warrior.

when you say you see "no output" you mean you get something like:
bash-2.05a$ fsck
bash-2.05a$

fsck cannot be run reliably while the system is booted. and, iirc, if 
it's run by a non-root user, you get that exact behavior. it may even 
do that if run by root when fully booted.

if you really want to use fsck, reboot into single user mode by holding 
down cmd-s while restarting.
