On my G3 powerbooks I don't want to cycle the hinges any more than I  
have to (since it is a weak spot on these machines and an expensive  
repair), so if I'm not moving the book, I'd rather not close the lid. A  
keyboard command is preferable in this instance.

I paid my $7 for Key Xing, a pref pane that lets you program the  
function keys. So in addition to F12 being "Eject," I have F11 for  
"Sleep," F10 to open or switch to Camino, and F9 to open Mail. F5  
through F8 are for business apps, etc.
But I also use the Power Button - "S" sequence to sleep as well. It's  
very fast.
