I don't have any firsthand knowledge with the Pismo but from everything I've seen they are rock solid. If you want something that is upgradeable the Pismo is your ticket. I had the opportunity to work in my local High School for the last 7 wks of school as the Computer Lab assistant and all the hardware problems were funneled through me to the district tech. We averaged one iBook being sent out for warranty work a week while I was there, (we had 110 in the building you do the math-None of them were the newer 800 or 900mhz models.), all because of the well documented screen/cable problem. I would be wary of buying an older iBook used/out of warranty/Applecare. That being said, they were loved by the teachers who used them and everything else seemed to work great. We bought my son a new 800mhz combo ibook last Christmas and he won't give it up for anything. It simply rocks. If you shop hard you can find new/refurbished iBooks very reasonable. SmallDog had their refurbished 14" 700Mhz combo's on sale for $1065 this past weekend. New 700mhz CD only under $800. If it were up to me I'd pony up for a new iBook- its the first "new" mac I've bought in the last 13 years. And I wouldn't hesitate to buy another one.

Speed is certianly a primary consideration but what about things like the quality of construction? Is the iBook as well made as the Pismo or is it going to fall apart? What about the feel of the keyboard? Things that make up the daily experience of using the computer. So if you had the oportunity to buy a Pismo or an iBook for say, $800 and the hard drive, RAM, etc where all about the same; which would you get and why?

I've been following this thread as I contemplate the next used PowerBook
to buy. I currently have a PB3400 so I would like to get up into the G3
realm next. I see some really good deals on used iBooks but the Pismos
seem to be very popular and are usually about the same money or more than
a used iBook. What are your thoughts on the iBook vs. the Pismo?

One thing to consider is that only the more recent iBooks (last two revisions??) have a 100mhz system bus like the pismo; this does make a significant difference to speed.
