Your assumptions are not entirely accurate. I bought my son's ibook for $1200. Used average on ebay at the time, for combo drive older model only about $130 less with slower processor, smaller hard drive, slower combo drive, and weaker video card, out of warranty. SmallDog selling Apple refurbed 800mhz combo drives for under $1000 for next 3 days. I'm willing to bet doesn't lose anymore value in next couple of years vs. pismo at $800 used which is what I was comparing value to on my post. For this price why wait? The performance/value/$$ ratio is as good or better than used.

Ummm.. not meaning any offense, but why? The last time I bought a new computer was in 1990. That was a high-end 386 IIRC, close to being cutting-edge (for the time), and the reason I bought it new was because there were few on the secondhand market.

An iBook is by definition not cutting-edge - it is value-priced. Much
better plan, IMHO, to let someone else take the computer off the shelf
and incur the resultant devaluation whack. I simply don't see the
percentage in buying a new (new) computer unless either:

a) a specific model is required for something, e.g. college course, or
b) it's a gift for someone else, or
c) you simply must have the BEST and LATEST now.

Simple economics: the same money that will buy you a new mediocre
computer will buy you a couple-of-years-old-cutting-edge model.
