I just purchased a "refurbished" 12.1 powerbook with superdrive from Smalldog... I called the techie there who was kind enough to open the box and check on dead pixels (there weren't any) and other things. Upon opening the box, he noticed the paperwork explaining the reason this machine was returned to apple. Apparently the original purchaser needed a machine that could boot off of sys 9.... the machine had no scratches or other signs of wear, like keyboard scratches on the lcd... so I went for it.
It arrived, no problems, no scratches...cept for a ti book manual instead of a 12.1 manual. Apple sent out a replacement asap. It too comes with a full Apple Warranty with trial of .mac and free apple care during trial period. I called with a few questions and was treated like a new customer...
So, I like refurbs... as long as they are checked first and you know what you're buying...

Whoa! Apple refurbed is not "new". It's B-stock. By "new new" I mean A- stock, never been sullied by the hands of Joe Consumer. Let's compare apples and apples here (no pun intended).
