I'm not interested in copying DVDs, but I *am* interested in putting them on my home server so I can watch them over Wi-Fi on my PowerBook without having to go to the DVD shelf (and also save the lifespan of my DVD-ROM drive.. plus I can copy them to my hard drive for viewing at work without carting DVDs around). I currently use my PC to compress my DVDs to ~650Mb DivX files. Is there an application that will allow me to do that in OS X? I've got as far as ripping and de-CSSing the files using DVDBackup (you have to do the audio and video streams separately, right?) but I can't find anything that will import the VOBs and compress them to 3ivx/DivX/other MPEG-4 format. Any ideas?
Mediapipe.
Not too simple to use. Basically its built around the Uni* idea of piping. That is many small processing chunks strung together to produce the result you want. Basically you want a file browser pipe, file streamer, possible a color conversion (there are basically 2 color spaces, some items only work in 1, some only in another), then a mpeg2/divX/mpeg4 encoder pipe. Then a second pipe to mux the sound and new video together. You can also mux the sound and video with QTPro, depending on the codec you've chosen. They also have a tool to produce .avi's if you also want to view the file you're making on a PC (and your Mac too.) There's quite an active forum for Mediapipe over at sourceforge, so when you download it, try it and if you're stuck persuse their forums for help.
Warning, encoding isn't very fast.
