This subject is covered in the current issue of the Voice newsletter of the
MacValley User Group, which ran an article about the various problems that
can be caused by USB devices and inadequate hubs. All the group experts
agreed that the best USB hub by far is the Per-Tech 7-Port Hubmaster, "...a
solidly built, if extremely ugly*, piece of equipment, and is to USB hubs
what Tripp-Lite is to power strips... I will speculate that the Per-Tech
succeeds where others fail due to the fact that it's got a very large
internal power supply to stabilize voltage on all devices..."

There was also a recent story about Per-Tech at www.macintouch.com which led
to a 4-fold increase in demand so "...please be patient... Quality can't be
rushed!"
