Swapped in new RAM from Chip Merchant (life warranty) even though I'd like to rely on the Apple 64MB (bottom), it's just not enough for OS X. The 128MB module (upper slot)
The bare minimum for installing OS X (meaning, the bare minimum that won't require 400 years to complete the install) is 128Mb. Why not try removing the Apple module and running just off the 128Mb module, in the lower slot? Just for kicks, of course.
I can convince myself the Jaguar CD has faintly cloudy area but no scratches are in evidence.
If you believe the CD is at all suspect, make a copy onto CD-R. If there are unrecoverable read errors while making that copy, then OK - your disk is FUBARed. If there aren't, then try installing off the copy.
I believe the 8GB partition limit doesn't apply to Lombard - even with an aftermarket drive, right?
I think you're OK there. The OS X installer warns you (and won't let you install) on >8Gb partitions on affected machines.
