(1) The OS9.2 built in disc burner software will not recognize this. Toast
I HATE the way Apple does this. ATAPI is standardized so that no special driver files are required. Apple only blesses certain models, and we have to live with the consequences whenever we upgrade.
(2) How do I tell whether the drive has been set to master or slave? Is
On slim CD-ROM drives, there are sometimes surface-mount resistors (shorting blocks) that need to be desoldered/shorted to set master/slave. Sometimes they will have DIP switches (quite rare). There is also a pin on the 50-pin connector on the back that, when jumpered to ground, forces the device to be a slave regardless of jumper settings.

It *might* matter if you need to reinstall OS X. I found that it is impossible to install OS X on a machine with a hard drive as master on the primary interface, and CD-ROM/RW/whatever as slave on the secondary interface. If the CD-ROM is on the secondary interface, it really should be set as master. Otherwise it might not be bootable (or at least not bootable with the 10.2.6 install CD-ROM).
