You run into the same problem with all the G3 and later machines. This is all thanks to Stevie. I can understand the idea of a common name but they really should have had some distinct, easily identified designation (such as model number).

While I see your point, I would rather try to do that [as you can differentiate model by year - PowerBook 2000, iMac summer 2000, or dominant added feature - such as Digital Audio G4s, Gigabit Ethernet G4s, DVI PowerBook G4 Titaniums, slot loading iMac G3s, CDRW iMac G3s, FireWire G3 PowerBooks].
With the PowerBooks at least you can tell one model from another based on ports. A lot of the iMac distinctions are based on internal differences (drive type, CPU speed).
Now while this may seem odd, we do the same with cars, I have a 3.1 1990 Olds blah blah blah. Try explaining the difference between the different Performa 61xx models or try to get someone to believe that the 7500 actually came before the 7200 or 7300. One could say that telling the difference between the Performa 61xx's was easy, cause they were all the same model but bundled with different software or RAM amounts, but there in lies the difference.
The 7200, 7500 and 8500 all came out at the same time AFAIK. The 7300 was later.
I know what you mean about cars. I had a 1969 Toyota and you sometimes had to differentiate the model based on serial number due to a design change in mid production year.
