Thank you Adam (Krevnik). I went to www.Macupdate.com as you suggested, found "Battery Reset" then was dismayed to see a bunch of reviews stating that this utility,specifically for G3's and Ibooks did not work for the folks writng the reviews.
None the lesss I downloaded, installed and restarted. Nothing happended. Then a few minutes later I noticed the X was gone from the power indicator by the clock and the bars had appeared on the control strip.
