I don't think this is early adoption... X has been available since late 2000. The early adopters were running the Public Beta. Panther even in the beta state is pretty stable, although you will want to wait for drivers you may need to get ported.... but being on a CRT iMac and Pismo, you probably not have much custom hardware that isn't USB or Firewire based.
