...Thanks for the ideas, Steve My firewire card is a generic, but it does show up on the desktop, although I don't know if it needs it's own driver.
When the iPod is plugged in, it turns on but then after a few seconds the screen says "ok to disconnect", with a big checkmark. The iPod does not show up on the desktop, or in iTunes.
