If I remember correctly, the keyboard and trackball are adb devices, but they use a different internal plug. You might check out some of the technical references online to see how they're wired.
Interesting concept for the machine. You can get some serious rechargeable batteries (check out these... http://nimhbattery.com/ap-8500-2.htm) these days that would fit into the battery bay and there's probably tons of space inside for everything else.
Don't know a thing about the interface to the screen, however. Maybe it's time to break out my old broken portable and see what I can fit in the case... ;)
