My feeling is that what you are asking is like hoping that Ford will
design
a 2004 Mustang with all new engine, amenities and traction but can
also use
1966 Mustang wheels and tires because you already bought them and they
are
just sitting in your garage doing nothing.
I don't follow your argument on why it is a "totally different analogy".
Still seems like a good one to me.

It doesn't work. Why? Well, unless Ford is using a smaller rim size and a smaller wheel-well on the new mustangs, the old wheels will fit just fine. If they don't fit this year, wait a few they probably will again. Each car company has a tendency to use a specific layout of posts for attaching lug nuts. I seriously doubt that Ford has changed theirs. For that matter there are only a few variances on the placement/number of posts within the industry. This hasn't changed in decades. So long as the tires are in good shape (doubtful if they're the originals), they can still be used. Now, automotive filters (of any type), that's a different story. These are changed regularly based on the shape and size of the engine compartment and the engine being used.

Pardon the off-topic-ness, but a bad analogy should be put to death.

A little more on topic: many have said it, in one way or another. Apple (along with many other companies) has to be able to make a cut-off. They've already spent probably well over a million man-hours (and women-hours) coding, debugging, and making the interface of this new OS. The original concept (back with Rhapsody) was IIRC to ensure it would run on all PPC macs. It just isn't feasible, without the cost of the product going up (not to mention the graphics requirements of the OS itself). If it doesn't work on your system, and you can't afford to upgrade to a new computer then you have two good choices.

1: stay with what ya got. It's still useful as it is. Apple isn't going to say you can't use it anymore.

2: do a smaller upgrade. Purchase a newer used computer. It's how I do it. In the end, I never spend more than $100 or so in the process, though my initial outlay may be quite a bit more. You computer has value to someone. The sooner you find them, the higher the value will be.

Sure, you have a third option, but whining is a piss-poor option.
