And at least two of us thing Laurent is overreacting. Just because I send an off-list off-topic email to one list member does not mean I'm spamming. If it turns into an off-list flame-war between myself and the listmember, then that's my problem and I can deal with it.
Make that at least three of us. I'm sorry, Laurent, but trying to control what people send to each other off-list is well beyond the scope of a nanny's responsibilities. And frankly, your threatening manner to those who disagree with you concerns me as well. Sending out comments like, and I quote, "If you don't like how it is run, you can always unsubscribe. Or I can help, if you wish." just because someone disagreed with you is really beyond the pale. (Given human nature in general, it's not likely to happen, but personally, I think you should apologize.)
This list is a good, open forum. I've been on several of Dan's lists (and others) for many years now, and frankly, this one is one of the most enjoyable. I particularly liked the recipe for black-eyed peas that showed a while back - great example of an on-topic post that generated a bizarre, but fun, off-topic thread.
I'd like to remind you of the lesson of King Log and King Stork. If you keep going along this coercive path, you may end up ruining the list. As someone pointed out, we're adults here and will generally police ourselves quite adequately. But neither you, nor Dan, nor anyone else has the right to determine my behavior off-list.
Cheers - Steve K.
